Do you need valid registration and insurance on a stored car in Dubai?
This site found no text requiring them while a car sits in private storage. Letting them lapse still costs you later, so keep both alive.
What that means in practice
Nothing in the sources read for this page says a privately stored car breaks a rule by standing with an expired Mulkiya. What the sources do support is a sequence of consequences. Fees build up after the grace period. RTA blocks your Traffic File two months after expiry. Renewal needs current insurance and a technical inspection.
The simple answer is to renew early. RTA opens the window 150 days before expiry, which means most owners leaving for a summer can sort it before they fly.
On insurance, the storage contract matters as much as the law. Vachi Storage includes individual insurance with no value printed, so ask for the figure. Extra Space requires your own policy. Car Safe and FoxBox advise one. Ask your insurer directly how cover works for a car in a third party's building.

Checked November 2026. Dubai Police's fines page and the Municipality's own page could not be read, so those figures rest on press reports.
How abandoned cars are treated
6,187 warnings
1,387 vehicles and pieces of equipment removed
Dubai Municipality's numbers for the first half of 2025, reported by Khaleej Times. No fixed number of days defines a car as abandoned: the warning ranges from 3 to 15 days, depending on its condition and location. These reports concern public spaces. A car in a contracted facility is a different matter. If you can only leave the car on the street, that is the case for paying for a bay.
Check these with RTA or your insurer
- Today's fine for an expired registration. The figures above date from 2020.
- The exact late fee. Sources give Dh35 for Dubai and other figures elsewhere.
- Export fees and how long temporary plates last. Trade sources quote 7 days, 15 days and "a few weeks".
- Whether a visitor may drive your car. The National, Gulf News and Policybazaar describe it differently.
- Whether insurance is valid while registration has lapsed. One motoring site says it is not, but this site could not confirm that with an insurer or regulator.
Questions owners ask
What happens if my car registration expires while I am abroad?
You have a 30-day grace period, then late fees accrue. Two months after expiry RTA blocks your Traffic File. Renew up to 150 days early before you leave, or use a legal representative, who has to attend in person. See RTA.
Can my car be towed if I leave it parked in Dubai?
On public land, yes. Dubai Municipality issues a warning of 3 to 15 days and can then remove the car to Al Awir, with a Dh500 fine plus towing and impound charges. Gulf News reported this in July 2026.
What do I do with my car if I am leaving Dubai for good?
Sell it or export it. On a sale the seller pays any fines and the car needs a technical inspection. On export, CarSwitch says the registration is annulled when you get the export certificate, and a financed car needs a mortgage release letter. Confirm the steps and fees with RTA.
